Congrats on starting guitar. I've been playing for ten years and taught for about six. Aren't the first couple of weeks fun? haha. Like Marshall said, stick to the first four frets. There's a whole bunch of different exercises you can do with just four frets. Then scales. I'm big on scales, I love them, but I think I'm in the minority. But once you get scales down, building chords becomes a lot easier and understanding music as a whole will become easier if it's something you want to become serious about. But really.
