I was in Houston this past week and found out about a new dining/entertainment complex built by Landry's (own's Landry's, Joes Crab Shack, Rainforest Cafe, and several others). It's called the Downtown Aquarium and it is opening this weekend. It's located downtown off of IH45 on 6 acres and cost $38million to build. It has two restaurants, a lounge, a mini-amusement park, a train ride that goes through a tunnel through a huge shark tank, a 50 tank aquarium walking tour, and an estimated 200,000 fish. There are 7 themed areas that include "touch tanks". Even a Louisiana Swamp area with alligators! I have the section from the Friday Houston Chronicle and will bring it to the meeting Sunday.
I will definately be checking it out on my next trip to H-town. I did some work at the Landry's Rainforest Cafe that just opened recently in Galveston. They had some awesome tanks there too. No corals or anything, but huge tanks with lots of neat fish, even a sea turtle. My dad is into sailing and has his boat in Corpus. He said that Landry's finally got approval from the city to take over one of the main t-heads there and convert it into a huge complex, similar to what they have done in other coastal cities. Hopefully they will build something cool there as well.![]()
