Do any of you have an Achilles Tang?
Has anybody on here had any longer term success with them? I saw one today, it was very small, about 3-4" it was the most active swimmer I have ever seen. I want to have one at some point, but I was just looking for some advice on the fish. Post up experiences that you have had or know of please.

Cool tang, I have never owned one.... But I will on buy next build along with my purple.....
If its anything like my yellow or purple, which I believe they are more related than lets say a naso or vlaminigi tang, they don't grow as quick.... Which is cool.. My naso needs a new home, and I bought him way after my yellow...

I've never had one though I've wanted one. Just FYI, LA lists them as "expert only" so they may be difficult to keep:

Here's a good thread on RC that talks about it:

It sounds doable but you need to have the right setup. Big tank, lots of flow and you probably want to qt since they're prone to ich.

Thanks guys, yea I found that thread on RC last night after I posted in here. Around new years I will get a 180 started, I want the achilles to be the center piece of the tank. I wanted to get a powder blue because I thought that they were active, they are like a 80 year old mallwalker compared to the achilles.

My cousin and i had got an order straight from hawaii, some small yellow tangs, gold rim, achilles tang, etc...
If i remember correctly the Achilles was a bully and he didn't last long either maybe 4-5 months, but my cousin was no expert reefer.
Five years ago think we paid $40 for it.

I kept one for several months in my 240 along with a powder blue, yellow and purple tang. The Achilles was the last one added and he held his own against the bigger powder blue. They are very delicate fish. They require pristine water, lots of nori, and plenty of room to swim. Finding a healthy specimen that is already eating in captivity is the key to success. I purchased mine from liveaquaria and he did very well. Unfortunately I had to get rid of all my livestock when we decided to build a new home.

Thanks for that post Ramsey, An achilles tang has been on my list of fish to own for quite some time as well. Been waiting until i got more experienced with fish and have more time to dedicate to sensitive fish as such. Very cool info. Good luck on yours when you decide to get one. Make sure to post pictures

Had an Achilles for over a year...active swimmer, ate good and my favorite fish. Unfortunately for me, he decided to jump out of my tank :(. I am no where near as good as I should be on tank husbandry and never had an issue with him. Maybe I just got lucky, but my Achilles required no special or expert care.
