Has anyone heard of this? I started researching it tonight. It seems promising but it's currently not being done in the US as far as I can tell. The idea is you mail your water to a lab, they provide you with a concoction of trace elements and amino acids to dose that brings your water very close to NSW. You get your water tested every few months and they adjust the recipe accordingly. It uses algae, skimmers and carbon as filtration. Oh yeah, and you don't do water changes.

I know, it sounds too good to be true. If by some chance it proves to be worthwhile though, I'd personally have no problem paying a small amount on water testing and trace elements and not do water changes or pay for salt. Again, I'm very skeptical and think its too good to be true but I did find it interesting and thought some of you would too. Here's a PDF that outlines what it's all about:

I'll have to read up on that later. That's really interesting though. Wonder why you can get away without water changes, if they have something that handles the no3?

kinda the same thing i do now, i test my water and add trace elements. i have algae and bio pellets, and GFO. so ive been doing less water changes, like once every 2 months. but its nice to take guess work out, i guess if you kept up with it i dont see why this wouldnt work, only thing i didnt see is how to get rid of nitrates.(i just skimmed it)

I would if it was available here! I don't think you can get the testing done here or get the trace elements. I would try it if I could though.

Chris, what was the stuff at MACNA that was like this? The booth with the chicks that everyone crowded at.
I think Randy over at Polly's was carrying their products.

Thrive does seem very similar. I wish they had somewhere you could send your water for testing like triton. Better yet, it'd be awesome if a LFS invested in the high tech gadgetry needed to give you super accurate test results (hint, hint!). I guess I could just test it myself, but I'm lazy and also quite skeptical of the results I get with hobby test kits. I dunno though, very few water changes seems pretty awesome in my book but when something sounds too good to be true, it is. It does make sense though. The most important thing I've learned in this hobby so far is that stability is crucial. I've always noticed that when I've done big water changes or made any major changes, things didn't seem too happy.
