Chip in Rimless GRRRRRRRR

Well, as luck would have it, just as I was getting ready to put water in the tank, I bumped against one of the rock walls in the house. It's kind of hard to see from the pic, but there's a decent sized chip at the bottom of the front pane of glass. How will this effect the integrity of the tank? Am I safe to put water in it, or should I get a new tank while swapping will be easy?

Steve, we had a chipped corner in our 280g and it was fine. My other half even glued the chip back in place and glued a piece of corner trim over it.

DOH!!! What are ya doing moving it by yourself man? Should have called me I could have come by to help you move it. How frustrating is that!! I would get a new one while you are empty. You worked so hard on getting it looking clean, neat and sweet for it to have a chip on it. Im sure it will hold water just fine but i would (for looks anyway) get it swapped out. If it covered it under warranty... If not then dont spend the extra money on it.

Is it just a surface crack or is it pretty deep in the glass? If its deep I would not chance it just because it could travel up the glass in time. Maybe you can call a windshield repair guy to fil it and seal it. IDK just a thought.

i agree with rick, this will be the easiest time to replace it. it is hard to see in the pic, but you never know if a chip will turn into a crack. not worth the risk in my opinion.

Yikes - first the leak now the chip! I had a 125 tank burst on me so I am not taking any chances but it's 'just' 40 gallons so might not be as horrid if it doesn't work out...

I've seen some tanks with some pretty gnarly chips hold water for years. (still holding... hope I don't jinx it!)

It's hard to see in the pic... but is that a sliver crack going off the top right? That could be a problem if it continues to spread once weight is put on it.

Even if it holds water, every time you notice the chip you'll be a little irritated.

depends if the tank is overbuilt or not. I would say if the glass is standard thickness I would not risk it

Still haven't seen this addressed... The chip would be less of a concern if that is actually a crack in the picture.
