Thread: glass top?

  1. #1

    Default glass top?

I was curious as to why not many people use glass lids on their salt tanks?
I have always heard of some people egg crate panels or not using a cover at all.
If a glass cover was used wouldnt that cut down on a lot of water evaporation from the tank?

evaporation also means cooling. Depending on ambient temperature, pump heat and heat emitted by your lights, cooling may be a very good thing.

I use a mesh top on the reef tank (got jumping prone fish in there) and topless on the seahorse tank.

After always dealing with the mesh top on the reef tank, going completely topless on the seahorse tank has been liberating! Oh the possibilities...

A topless tank and a small fan can easily save (cool) you a few degrees during our hot and humid South Texas summers.

If you covered the top of the tank completely, not only would you lose the cooling effect, but it would get even hotter. Think of a car parked in the sun with the windows rolled up.

Also, glass is not 100% clear. It would filter some of the light reaching the water. Even worse as the salt creep on the bottom of the glass would be impossible to keep up with.

= significant reduction in light penetration = no good for corals.
