You want the water level in the overflow box about 1/2-1" below tank water level. If you use a durso, the water level will be about 1/2-3/4 the way up the 90 on the standpipe...if that makes any sense.

you don't want the water to pool in your drain line but rather continuously downwards

Going to try and build a Durso standpipe tonight, I'd order one but the noise is going to drive me crazy by the time it gets here.
The side of the overflow is visible. Can I spray paint the PVC black, to better hide it in my overflow?

Yes you can. Go to walmart and get some Krylon fusion spray paint.
