I use both in my sump. I have about 140 lbs liverock, Bioballs right under where the water comes into the sump from the tank to keep the water quiet and from splashing when it enters the sump.

I use bio balls with filter pad on top to keep them clean for one of my drains, the other side/drain just runs into a skimmer section. I have been using bio bale first and then switched over to bio balls since 1991, sorry I am slow to change something that has worked for all those years. I do like my fuge with chaeto and large rubble for buggers to crawl and feed in.

    My filter

1st Chamber Skimmer & Carbon Reactor, 2nd chamber Mesh and sponge, 3rd Chamber 10-15lbs of LR-Rubble & Macro the returned where there is approx 120lbs of LiveRock in the main display.

I run my filter in this sequence mostly beacuse I want my last chamber to be the breeding ground for all things good. Cope, amphi, dusters etc. From there they can only go to the return pump into the main display and do not have to try and make it through the gauntlet of mechanical filtration skimmer/reactor/mesh etc....
