Default Troy Built 2 cycle trimmer repair

The shop I take my lawn equipment is behind a month on trimmers so I cant take mine to them.

My trimmer will idle but once I give it gas it dies. Ive changed the spark plug, gave it new tubing and bulb. Cleaned the carb and filter.

The guy at the shop says over time soot/black stuff will clog the muffler and it will need burned out to clean it. I do not own a blow torch. Anyone on here that can give me a hand with this?

Be sure none of the fuel hoses are sucking shut when running, sometimes they will calapse on itself. About the exaust remove it start it to see if that helps. Sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

Look at the end of the muffler. Do you see a screen inside of the opening? If so, you can remove it and try to run the trimmer. If you damage the screen when pulling it out don't worry. It is not a vital part but, you should replace when you can. If the muffler is clogged you will get the problems you are talking about - it will run at idle and bog down/stall at throttle.

Thanks John I will see if removing the screen will help.

I did take off the muffler and start the trimmer and it backfired a lot so I didnt throttle it up.

You need the muffler on there for back pressure. They are tuned to run with it in place. Most of the time the problem you are describing is the spark arrestor has clogged up. That is the screen I was talking about. Should look like a strainer or wire mesh and cone shaped.
