Am using a Mag 18 for mine return pump and it has a restarting problem after power outrage. It runs when power came back(very warm to touch) ,but not pushing any water out. Any idea? is this common for a Mag? thanks

Reefing is just like cooking, all the ingredients have to be just right , except you don't have to bring the water to a BOIL...
My old mag5 used to do it, I had to tap it with a hammer to get it to go. I have your other one but my car broke down. I gotta replace some hoses, hopefully today, on it and then I can bring it back. Something gets jarred up in them, not sure why though.

This is a VERY common problem with Mags. As they age, they have a hard time restarting. I don't use them for returns anymore, because of that.

Something may have bent the shaft or the added heat could be warping the magnet. If you haven't done so lately, you may want to open the propeller compartment and give it a good cleaning. At least once or twice a year it's good to give the submersible pumps a scrubbing and soak in some vinegar water to remove crud and mineral buildup. I learned this the hard way. Three years ago, I had a mag18 seize up and it warped the entire pump case. However it's sister pump(8yrs old) is still going strong.
get a red dragon pump or a eheim 1260

I had trouble with my Mag9 as well after a few years (~5). After a few cleanings with vinegar it wouldn't restart no matter what. I think the magnet actually swells a bit. I replaced the impeller and now it's not a problem.
