I will try to get some pics...just got out of surgery and taking it a bit early. I have st. Aug. grass. I have some grassy stuff but it doens't bother me like the broadleafs do. They are pokey and spikey. Round-up nukes them pretty good.

I did go get some fert. for southern lawns make by scotts. I didn't get the one with the pesticide since I would rather spot kill then put everywhere and plan on doing that in the coming weeks.

Allen mentioned compost making lawn green. What should I know about compost and that kinda stuff for the lawn? I guess I shouldn't fert. and compost??

Compost helps leach nutrients/organic matter back into your lawn. It is best applied while your grass is dormant so it doesn't burn it. It is best to just add about 1/2 an inch which is then just raked across the lawn helping it get down to the soil. Fertilizer and composting could burn your lawn but that depends on the amounts used etc. With a good compost there really isnt a need for fertilizer. Like I mentioned before I would highly recommend a landscapers(human"omnivore") compost as it has alot more nutrients than a regular(usually a ruminant"herbivore") compost. The aggies did a good study on the differences between them all but I cant find my notes at the moment.

^ I agree with Kevin. The compost is the best spring time fertilizer you can get and does not require any other fertilization until Summer. Summer time fertilization should be something very low in nitrogen high in iron. As for the compost you can put it down in a very light layer now, but I would not wait much longer as Kevin is correct in that it can burn (yellow) the grass. When you purchase fertilizer (especially Scotts) make sure that it is for your grass type. Some weed and feeds are species specific.

On an other note - I don't landscape or do maintenance for money anymore so I am not advertising services. With that said if anyone needs help w/ advice you can pm for contact and I will try to help where I can.

It was Scotts for southern lawns...I have st. aug. I haven't put it on the lawn so I can take it back. Guess I need to go double check it.

    Thanks for all your help!!

Is there a brand of broadleaf herbicide that is better over the other? I think there are a couple of areas I am going to have to break down and use it.

I myself prefer Ortho Weed-B-Gone in the concentrate. Buy a 1 gallon pump sprayer and mix what you need. I have used it on my own yard with great results. Since I no longer own my business I let my applicator's license lapse or I would hook you up w/ better stuff.

Is there any danger with using Ortho Weed-B-Gone when my kiddos play in the yard?

**** I feel old. I'm 29, but herniated(sp?) a disk in my back last Aug/Sept...Since then, the smallest thing sets it off, sucks...Mom came by and wanted to help. Said it's nice to test it on my lawn in case we screw up, lol.....Only thing that sucks more is my stupid self doing this to re-aggravate it, lol:
but first, the bait and switch

    "Honey.....I got something for you."

    SUCKA! It's sod!

my youngest(1 year old) loved following behind me while the oldest(2 year old) enjoyed throwing dirt on the carrier and riding the old grass to the side of the house where I'll be sifting out the dirt and such to throw the old grass in the trash.

Anyone have an idea on how to dispose of a bunch of rock? Next I will be doing the stone like surrounds on the trees in my front yard and the previous homeowner used extra bricks in a cheap@** look to surround the tree with only one layer, then piled a few white rocks about the size of basballs around it. Not completely piled, but just for a look it seems like. It's a bigger mesquite tree. I'm tempted to even cut it down due to the thorns. You can see it in my pic where my youngest son is walking behind me.
