Thread: Anyone keep snakes?

  1. #1

    Default Anyone keep snakes?

I just got this guy the other day. He's pretty awesome. Anyone have an experience with snakes? If you have pictures of your tanks that would be great. I'm looking for some cool ideas for his 20g long.

Very nice snake. Hondurans are great pets.

I used to have a pretty large collection of snakes. Black Blood pythons, Kayuadi Dwarf Reticulated Pythons, Carpet Pythons, Childrens Pythons, Woma pythons, Surinam Redtail Boas, Columbian Boas, Rosy boas, Honduran milksnakes, Black Milksnakes, Albino Nelsons Milks, Cali Kings, Grey Banded Kings, Albino Brooks Kings, Eastern Chain Kings, Albino Taiwan Beauty Ratsnakes, Albino Sonoran Gopher Snakes, and uh I think I'm forgetting some.

My best advice is to get a cage made specifically for snakes. They have a knack for getting out of aquariums with screen tops. I used alot of Vision cages http://www.visionproducts.us/htm7/cages.html and cages from Habitat Systems http://www.habitatsystemsltd.com/

But you can go to kingsnake.com and find a bunch of manufacturers.

I am not good with the tri-colors. Sorry. More of a ball python and boa guy. Pretty snake either way.

Have the prices gone down on albino balls? I would love to get one.

Right now I have in in a 20g long with a screen lid. Do the clips for the screen lids work well? I'm worried he can push open the screen.

I grew up with reptiles, was actually thinking of becoming a herpetologist when in high school.

Snakes are great and fairly easy to keep depending the species. Largest snake we had was a 15ft albino burmese. Most aggressive was a green tree boa, really to me looked at and amired versus holding. My dad loves to tell stories of how I would come home with bloody arms and hands because I was out in the fields catching 5ft rat snakes.

As far as the cage ventalation is key. You do not want it to be to humid and thats the problem with using glass aquariums. Monitor that closely. As far as the lid, if you are worried put something with weight on the top corners.

I wouldn't trust the clips. I never used them. I agree with just adding some weight to the corners. Or build your own lid.
