Mag 18 on 75 gallon

Ok. So I just bought a Mag 18 for a steal of a deal, used of course. I don't even know if my tank can take that much flow. I'm in the process of building my first non-nano tank. I have two drilled returns and a lower spray bar. Will this be over board? Will there be to much heat from this sucker? I also have a overflow with a a 1.5" and 1" drain. So that should pour a lot of water to my sump for the Mag to take care of. Total impulse buy.

I ran a MAg 18 on my Oceanic 75RR. It had a 1" drain with a 3/4" return. Mag 18 does not pump 1800 gal per hour at a 4.5' lift. The person I sold the tank to still uses the pump, and yes you must run it externally to keep from over heating your tank. If it leaks apply a little of high quality GE silicon to the cover.

I really don't want to drill my sump. Is it possible to go with a u tube over the top or am I asking for trouble. I'm trying not use power heads since my tank is already drilled with lockline returns. I don't really want to have a closed loop and a sump return either. Is this too much flow for a sump anyway I've hearded too many different opinions?

You can run it submerged in your sump. Just make sure you have at least a couple of clip on fans or something. Id run one over the sump and one over the top of the tank. This will help keep the tank cool.

Ive ran a mag 24 in a sump and didnt have any water overheating issues using the cheap clip on fan method.

The fan over the sump ran 24hrs. The one over the tank ran on the same cycle as my lights.

Well thanks Ray. It never dawned me that I could use a fan. Before I set this system up I'm going to run everything for few days to test it out for any issues.
