Thread: Guitar players...

Congrats on starting guitar. I've been playing for ten years and taught for about six. Aren't the first couple of weeks fun? haha. Like Marshall said, stick to the first four frets. There's a whole bunch of different exercises you can do with just four frets. Then scales. I'm big on scales, I love them, but I think I'm in the minority. But once you get scales down, building chords becomes a lot easier and understanding music as a whole will become easier if it's something you want to become serious about. But really. HAVE FUN!! haha. Good luck!

Dude, I can't carry a strumming tune to save my life, but if you want I have about three or four scales I've memorized that I can teach you. Two of them came from "guitars for dummies" (pst! I think I'm the dummy). I like the finger picking and for awhile even grew out my right hand finger nails... of course that was a few years ago before the gray started coming in.

I can also teach you the opening riff for Tesla's "Love Song" which really sounds cool. I wanted to try it on a the 12 string but never had the chance. I'd have to start reworking my calluses though.

Tabcrawler dot com is where I really spent a lot of time learning, but if you get the chance to learn to read music I think you'll be better off.

Man...wasn't expecting so much help. Thanks everyone for taking time from your tanks to reply!

Some very useful help on here that I will definitely take. I'm just learning chords through TAB right now for the instant gratification. I find my self wanting to play all day long...pretty addicting.

Nice to know I can go to my reef site to get help with the guitar...so what don't you all do? LOL!

    Thanks again!

Rob - I am not a guitar player but have been playing an instrument since I was 8 yrs old. I originally went to college for music and played professionally for about four years (musician bum). I can tell you this... learn the right way. Take some lessons and have someone show you HOW to play. I learned how to play piano on my own and it took me years to un-learn my bad habits, JMHO.

Ok so can someone point me to some website to learn to play acoustic? I bought my wife a guitar, and she has not touched it but once. She used it as a prop to take pictures with. I spent 200 bucks on it on sale because I thought she would get into it. Even bought her pink picks. No dice.

I really want to learn how to play. I can barely play the beginning of Redemption Song by Bob Marley.

I have all of the sound programs, fruity loops, pro tools, and reason. Very cool after toying around for a few hours you can start to get the hang of things. I am sure to master them is much, much harder!

Please list some sites that show pictures of where my hands should be. I cannot do the youtube videos, I can never see the proper finger arrangement.
