    Default Ubuntu Question

Is it possible to upgrade Ubuntu 7.04 to 9.* without burning a disk? Please be specific if you can. N00b here!

I have the new distro files (v.9.*) but I ran out of cds.

I'm having trouble finding info on the net regarding this specific issue.

    Thanks in advance.

you should be able to do the upgrade over the network assuming the machine is online

    http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

this says you need to have v8.something but if you just keep doing the same process over and over after each reboot it should serve the same purpose

    Hey Tony...

I decided to install openSUSE (10.2) instead. I've had it burned to disk for a while, I just never used it. openSUSE seems a bit bloated, looking at a 40+ minutes for installation, lol. Figure I'll update over the network once I get it installed, thats if I can get connected to the net .

Ubuntu has a great community. As for the upgrade you should be able to upgrade online from 7* to 9* but will require to do multiple upgrades. It is easier to backup, download the the latest and reinstall.

For the future if you do the install and create a separate /home on another partition, future upgrades won't affect your home directory so you won't have to copy over your backed up data every install.

Plus if you use a separate /home partition you can switch distros from ubuntu to suse to gentoo to whatever and not worry about your data (as long as you don't format /home )

    Well...

openSUSE drive support sucked!!! I couldn't either the graphics or wlan drivers working.

    So...

I downloaded a copy of UBUNTU 9.0 and used a blank DVD to burn a live cd. It turns out that UBUNTU supports all my drivers, go figure. I guess I should have stuck with it to begin with, lol.

You guys got any advice for a Linux beginner? I am Windows savy but am clueless right now, sink or swim right.
