Thread: Dosing Phyto

  1. #1

    Default Dosing Phyto

    Maastards,

I am thinking of making a Phyto reactor and adding the phyto with a dosing pump. I have toyed with the idea for years, but thanks to Pete (Ping) now I am ready to pull the trigger. However, I would like to get some experienced opinions on doing this, both long and short term effects(ie increase in algae, high nitrates/phosphates ect.) Please let me know about your previous or existing phyto setup.

    Thank you

I am trying to add a different dimension to my aquarium. It is not about the cost, but rather consistancy. I know Jordan has a superior product, but I would like to make my dosing of phyto as regular and cosistant as dosing calcium and alk. I am curious of the long term effects of this. When we dose homemade phyto we also dose Nitrates and Phosphates at the same time. Will this build up in our system over time? What if we stop, will we have a crash in the foundation of the food chain?

This may sound like a silly question you say homemade phyto, what is the source ?How is this made?

What I mean by homemade, is to grow a particular type of Phyto ie Nannochloropsis or Isochrysis. There are many different types of Phyto to choose from, there are some with antiseptic properties.
