Thread: Major Evaporation

    Default Major Evaporation

Well we've had the tank up and cycling for 3 weeks now and are running into the issue of having a 1/2 gallon evaporation every 2 days. The temp is good, the house sits about 72 but its an open top tank. Any suggestions on how to cut down on the evaporation or would I just be better off to set up an auto top off system??

    Thanks,

    Dani

1/4 gpd is really nothing , my 200g loose about 2-3 gpd. Try ATO or manual drip with ro/di water from some type of resevoir.
Reefing is just like cooking, all the ingredients have to be just right , except you don't have to bring the water to a BOIL...

I loose about 5g every 2 days, so ATO should help out.

The reason I worry is its only at 14 gallon tank. If it were bigger i'd just say oh well its normal.

My setup evaps near 5 gal per day. I bought a Kalk reactor from Hobogato and set it up to accomplish 2 tasks at once. I have low pressure RODI water coming into the reactor that then drips constantly and directly into the sump. A fine adjustment valve allows me to set the drip rate to keep a steady water level, and maintains the ALK level, also.

I have an opinion that mechanical and electrical devices can fail. The more of these you add into your systems, the higher the chance of failure.

    Try to keep it simple.

14g tank as in the biocube 14? you can buy the JBJ ATO and use that. use a really smal pump to drip water in the back 3rd chamer where the sensor will be. i use the tom's aquatic aqualifter for it and works okay, better than having to dose manually

Its not a biocube. Honestly I have no clue what brand it is. I bought it on consignment from Aquatech in Austin.

your only option is a ATO of some kind tunze is the best but bang for the buck go JBJ ATO and use a MaxiJet 900 or 1200 pump...Do not use the Aqualift pump or whatever its called
Going to change my screenname to ReefCube soon!
