Thread: wave maker question

    Question wave maker question

I just got my first tunze wave box last friday. It is for my 120 gallon.. It looks great, the wave motion is really cool. My question is ..Can the water quality go down for a while after introducing a wave maker to a system? I think its because its moving water in spots where it wasn't moving much before. My corals aren't looking so great ..as in they aren't extending their polyps as much as before the wave box was put in. We are always doing 10% water changes weekly. I'm begining to think I should do an extra 5% this week. Has your water quality gone down after adding a wave box? The fish seem fine just the LPS and softy corals aren't looking happy.

btw..this tank has been running for over a year..with just regular cheap power heads at first, then upgraded to koralias and now a tunze wave box.

The corals may take some time to get used to the new and better flow.

you may also have a bit more particulate in your water as the wavebox probably does a better job of keeping the detritus suspended in the water column. ultimately it should improve water quality by allowing your skimmer to pull out more.

Yeah my skimmer seems to be pulling a lot more gunk out of the water since we added the wavemaker. So my corals won't be happy for a little while, untill this wave maker makes the water quality better? Do you guys think an extra 5% water change is a good idea or should I just watch and wait?

As long as you didn't disturb a deep sand bed the extra detritus in the water column can act a food for your corals, however and extra 5%water change can't hurt

Joel, I can't tell you to be honest with you....I am still playing with the thing to get the single wave going. I don't have the frequency set correctly so I have a ripple effect right now.

I know that you do need additional directional flow, which I have, but from my understanding it takes the place of several pumps and eliminates the dead spots everywhere in the tank....

Just what I read, not from experience.....plus it really looks cool...LOL

um my tank doesn't look nearly as nice ..still working to make it look great..We need to do some cleaning. My long tentacle plate is looking better today, not as big as usual but better.

Alot of talk is going on about wave boxes....and its got me thinking....you see waves on youtube with big and small waves, so im wondering...does that make a bunch of noise??...does is make a sucking sound when it takes in water??...how about the drain to the sump??..(overflow).im sorry and i dont mean to jack your thread...but if you could share that would be great....ty ty....
