thanks sly, for all the info, and sharing the pics. i'll check out the rough series. i'd been looking for a "let's go!", as i always prefered them over the Fodors travel series. keep the sugestions coming.

I have some friends that have been there a few times recently, though I heard more stories about the crazy bars & girls(hopefully they were girls).

I don't know how i missed this thread. I have had some wild times in Thai. The two most solid peices of advice from my times there

    1. Don't pick up a "girl" in a bar. Most of them are really really nice looking, however have an extra package down low(I did not learn this from experiance because i was forewarned however someone i know did.)

    2. If it is dark outside, try if at all possible to walk toward the middle of the street. I have known a couple of sailors walking to close to the alleyways and they have been grabbed and draged in, only to get their wallet stolen and face smashed in.

It is a wonderfull country just be carefull in the city, the locals know you are a tourist with money.

I don't know how long it's been since you've been there but my friend went twice in the last 2 years. He said that "industry" is much more "regulated" now. All of those bars & their "employees" are sectioned off from the straight bars & their "employees". As long as you're on the right side of town, you should be ok, so I hear.

I think the crocodile dundee method is most effective in a situation like that!
