To GAC, or not to GAC?

Ok, let's see how big a mess I can stir up, here... I've been reading conflicting opinions on whether or not to use Granular Activated Carbon in a reef tank. Some say GAC is great for keeping the water clean. Others say it cleans TOO well and makes it harder to keep corals that feed on DOC in the water. I'd love to hear what the local community thinks about the topic.

using it in small amounts is like buying an insurance policy - it won't keep anything bad from happening, but sure helps to have it when something does happen
