diy pvc overflow
has anyone else tried this type of overflow?

I finished building one and have tested it over and over, every time the pump turns back on it starts the siphon back up again.
I know it's not the greatest looking but I painted mine black to help hide it, and you can't beat the price.

functional I guess, but dont' get a snail caught in there, also other than the weight of the water, how do you keep it stable on the back of the tank?

Yeah it will have a screen of some type to block the snails.
Since mine uses pvc all the way to my sump it didn't move at all when I had it in my tank to size everything. I was worried about that at first when I just had the overflow built, it would hang sideways. I don't think it would work as is for soft tubing to the sump.

I have eggcrate on mine right now but once it goes into the tank I will probably get a 1" Intake Screen.

i build this before, the open screen was above water 1" and the hermit crap still get in --> since the opening drain is small, a lot of algae grown there, got to clean it all the time
my other mistake, i added the siphon valve, this failed once in a while (have to keep siphon pump run all the time) or Don't add siphon valve
flood the floor a few times for me with these 2 mistakes.

How was the open screen above water 1"? Your siphon valve probably had a small air leak. It has to be airtight once the siphon has started.
