    Default Changing out tank

I am finally getting around to changing out my 100 gallon tank. It is being replace with the same size just drilled. My question is: How much of the old water do I save and re-use? Also any tips for making the change less stressful on the fish and corals? I have a 30 gallon refugium under the tank with mangroves rock and macro.

    thanks

I'd save as much of the old water (at least 50%) as you can and make sure to have some new water made up ahead of time to replace however much you lose. I think the main thing with doing a tank change or upgrade like that is the sand bed. Anything you can do to lessen a sand storm when you turn your pumps/powerheads back on will help. Corals should be ok and as long as you are easy on the fish, they should be ok as well.

    David,

As Chris said, the sand will probably be your biggest issue... I'd try and save ALL of your water - about 1/2 to keep your livestock in, and the other 1/2 for the tank. Borrow buckets if you need to - I probably have a dozen or so around, plus a large walmart tub (19g). That would be good for rinsing out your sand with SW (get rid of some of the grunge and built up detritus). I'd rinse the sand with SW, put it in, add your liverock, 50% of your old water, 50% new, and filter the heck out of it. Yse filtersocks if you can, to your sump. Livestock will be fine for at least 24 hours in buckets - remember, they get shipped in bags and 48 hours is usually fine.
