For a small fee of $15,000 plus a $200 tax they can be yours. I've seen some SBR MP5 clones on the net with silencer that run $2200 and around $1500 with no silencer plus the $200 tax. I've considered one of those. Awesome weapons. I like guns that aren't really practical.

Running 35 rounds through a pistol is a blast especially when bump firing them.

Yeah, all it takes is money! I got to keep playing the lottery! :P

As far as just having a gun to have fun with shooting at targets or varmit hunting, there are tons of options. I only own a shotgun for dove hunting and an old 22 that belonged to my great grandfather, but one of my friends at work is a gun nut and I get to play with some of his toys when we go out to the ranch. Like you mention the AR15 is good and their are lots of accessories for them. My friend has the M4 shorty law enforcement version and decked it out with a fancy front rail that has a vertical grip, pressure activated flashlight, some kind of laser scope, and the adjustable rear stock. It's a mean looking gun. It is fun to shoot and makes lots of noise. He also has a Ruger Mini-14 ranch rifle (shoots .223) that he fixed up. You can find tons of 22 cal rifles that you can modify in lots of ways. It's all a matter of what you want to do with it and how much you want spend. My buddy spent a ton of money modifying two Ruger 10-22's, converting them over to .177 (i think that's what it is) with some custom stocks, barrels, and huge scopes. I believe these rounds travel much faster and are what some of the professional target competition people use.

Personally, I like the Ruger 10-22's as they are inexpensive, the ammo is inexpensive, they are dependable, and they are fun for just plinking away at targets or whatever else you find out in the country.

I thought you had to get some kind of law enforcement sponsorship to get a license to buy an automatic.

No sponsorship needed. You need chief law enforcement officer (county sheriff, chief of police, city/county judge and DA tend to work too) sign off on your paperwork when you submit them. All this says is you're not a violent criminal and have no known mental problems. If they won't sign, like here in Austin, you can easily incorporate yourself and bypass that step. The biggest barrier to owning something fully automatic is the cost of the firearm. I think a Mac-10/11 is still the cheapest thing out there fully auto and they run $2500-4000. Several years ago they were in the $1200 range. Uzi's run around $6000 these days. Collecting Class III's is an expensive hobby.
