I don't blindly support any bill until I tear it apart with a fine tooth comb and dissect it at least twenty different ways. (which I haven't done to this one as of yet.. therefor I don't support it)

I know lawmakers like to word things "just so" so they can put in a loop hole.. or word it so that the public thinks it's a good thing by the way it "sounds".. or make it so they can add on or change things once they have support...

ok.. so I don't trust the government, politicians or lawmakers (and any others I have left out)..

<--- learned a long time ago that MOST of those in charge really don't give a darn... they just go along with whoever puts the biggest envelope of cash into their pockets...
Some people are like slinkies.. they serve no useful purpose what so ever.. but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs...

I'm with April on this one, I've worked at a pet store long enough now to know what people can and WILL do to animals especially dogs. I've seen to many people come in with a puppy that they say they picked up from the front of walmart or the flea market and its on its last strand of life. Once you have tried to talk someone into going to a vet for their horribly sick and malnourished animal infested with parasites and they refuse because its not worth all the money, you have to appreciate the things that this kind of bill would limit people to do.

as for the bill its self i don't think that it is fair to alot of responsible pet owners but i honestly do like the general direction that it is heading.

as far as the pure breed animals being the only ones permited thats like Hitlers idea of Arianism. If I can remember right dogs weren't always pure breeds they were mixed breeds that were bread for a purpose.

The problem with legislation from politicians is anything that "THEY" do is over-dramatic.

It doesn't matter if the research is 20 years old. Dogs that are neutered that early have delayed closure of their growth plates. So they get taller but have longer weaker long bones that's a fact. That may not be a big deal with small dogs but when you have dogs that are three feet tall at the shoulder it's a big deal. That why my vets & every irish wolfhound breeder say not to neuter them until 18 months. The exemption is only for 75 days, still not long enough and I'm sure requires paying another fee.

All of the working dog associations, police service dog associations are opposed to it. I guess they're all just wrong and some politicians and animal rights activists know more than them about what they do.

I can hear the 911 call now..
    "Help I'm being robbed!"
911 operator - "I'm sorry all of our officers are busy looking for dog balls at the moment"

Anyway you spin it, it's just bad policy.

All of my animals have all of their shots each year. It cost a bundle but I believe it is worth it. I guess it is like you can't drive unless you have insurance. Mmmmmm I gues the lady that hit me two years ago missed that law.

    just my thoughts

The problem with the early spay/neuters is there is little research that has been done. There are too many variables about how puppies/dogs are raised to say its caused by early spay/neutering. There is a study though that was done by a group who raises puppies for programs like assistance dogs. I will try to find that study. Its been posted before on the national saint list I am on. The findings were not good. The dogs who were neutered early had lots of issues. This is the only study though that I have seen that has been done on the early spaying topic that is in a controlled environment.

i have been looking into buying an American Mastiff, and while they require the dog to be neutered at 7 months, they recognize there there is enough evidence to support holding off on this, especially since the dogs are considered puppies for 24 months.

The problem is, much like gun control, more laws simply don't solve a lot of problems. there has to be a willingness on the part of the owner to actively seek out free spay/neuter services if offered, as given in the above example about austin. if the owner is simply irresponsible, then they are irresponsible, and no law, no matter how well written will change that.

Anyhow, coming from the giant breed dogs perspective, wolfhounds, danes, mastiffs, etc... these dogs are simply in a class all their own concerning their requirements, you can't pidgeonhole them in w/ a bunch of dogs that weigh 5 to 20 lbs.

there has got ot be a better way, but I'll be darned if i know it.
