I don't know where you heard that 77 is "better" than 79 for a reef tank, but I sincerely doubt that it's true. I believe that the average global reef temp is around 80, and remember that most of the south pacific shallow reefs where our corals originally come from are on the warm side. You're pretty close to the ideal reef temp right now, if anything a little on the cool side.

I went to Jamaica, Grand Caymen, and Cozumel this summer to dive and the temp was 85 at all 3 places, even down to 100ft.

I have a chance to demo one of those peltier chillers that was at this years MACNA. it will hold tank temp. at what ever level you set it with a 1 degree swing up/down.

my tank temp is now at 79.1 day(with 4 cpu fans) and 79.5-.7 night with fans off.

i know that people get better color, growth, and health out of there tanks with cooler temps.

but what is the lowest i can run? is 70 the lowest? what or 72?

i know 79 is good. and 77 is better, but is it ok to run it in the lower 70's?

i'm evaping about 1.5 gallons a day with the 4 fans. in a total water volume of 120g. but i'd like to do away with the 4 fans and get the tank cooler with less noise.

    current lighting and equipment are:

    250wtt se 10k mag.ballast
    2-75wt vho's
    2-2600 seio's with seio controller
    1 blueline hd40.

want to move the mh light to a 400wt 10k
Hey TroyPham, Who handles the Peltier chiller. They run with fans don't they. Seems I read a thread on RC about them. The person who was using one says he loved it. Quiet, less power consumption and was able to controll his temp easily. He claimed it worked as well or better in his opinion that the chiller he had. Would like to look into these.

    Thanks
Aquarium specialty and his business partner are the only importers/distributer for them. The guy on RC that is using one said he can run his tank at 78 with half the energy it took him to run his 3/4hp chiller in AZ summers.

I'm going to Demo one in the next month or so.

The thing with peltiers is that one side of them gets very hot. So the better you can cool the hot side the better the cold side will work. I have thought about putting one of these in my sump (they are cheap and easy to build) but the problem was the cooloing. Alot of "hardcore" computer guys use peltiers to cool thier CPUs then water cool the hot side.

Troy when you get this thing in let me know. Would love to take a look at it.

OH and my tank goes from 78 to 80 with no cooling but a fan across the water surface

Troy..you lucky little turd!!! (j/k) I'm gonna have to come up to H-town to check it out. I've had so many problems with my tank lately. I've lost like 70% or all my sps. I dont know if it's the temp change but it looks like i'll be getting a chiller once again. I'm running 78-82, sometime 80 w/out the halides even being on. I need to hurry and move the tank over to my new house.
