I thought all you really have to do to flush an RO is to remove the restrictor on the 'discard' water side?

(or crank up the output so most/all of the water is coming out the discard outlet)
Flush kits provide an easy way to allow the flow to bypass the restrictor - it's more convenient in most cases that removing the restrictor entirely. Both ways you suggest will work too.
