Just wanted to post some bad experiences with appliance repair companies here in S.A. in case anyone ends up needing work done.
This past week my refridgerator wasn't cooling. I cleaned all the ice/frost out of the freezer thinking it was blocking the circulation but no help. I called around and ended up having A-One Appliance Service come out to take a look at it. The tech checked it out briefly and said it's either the defrost thermostat switch or the defrost heater and it will cost me $250 (this off the top of his head without looking anything up). I'm sitting there with all my food going bad so I say OK. As it was Saturday and the parts houses are closed he can't do the heater until Monday evening. He tells me to let all the ice behind the rear panel melt and then I can turn it back on for now until he comes back. Well yesterday I decide to search the internet and find I can order both parts for about $20 each and they have instructions on how to do the repairs. The switch is basically two wires connected with some crimp connectors and the heater is has a premade connector that just plugs in so it will take maybe 10 minutes to do the work. Now do you really think 10 minutes of work and $40 in parts is worth $250? I didn't think so and I canceled the guy coming back out.
A few weeks/months ago, my fiancee's washer machine quit agitating. She got in a hurry to fix it instead of letting me call around and she had Lisa's Appliance Service come out to work on it. She ended up paying around $175 to replace a broken part that I later found out only costs about $15 and can be replaced fairly easily by anyone.
Basic point here is to search around online for info before you call for a repair. There are several websites that will help diagnose the problem, tell you which parts could be bad, and provide info on doing the work yourself. Most of them also ship parts the same day they are ordered.
