Thread: Wrasse ID?

    Default Wrasse ID?

    Dear Maastards,

I have looked on numerous websites such as wetwebmedia, fishbase, and others.

Anyone have any thoughts? I believe it is Halichoeres marginatus (Dusky Wrasse). Here is a link to a photo of H. marginatus.

Here is the photo of the fish I want to identify:

Thanks for any help on this one.

Looks juvenile with that ocellated eye. How big is it? Is it possible that it could still change altogether as it grows? A lot of wrasses change colors completely and lose the eye later as fast free swimming adults.

    Gorgeous nonetheless.

I got some idea from Reef Central that Halichoeres marginatus is correct. See the third photo down on this link: http://species.fishindex.com/species_47 ... natus.html.

The Black-spotted never gets dark like the one in my picture.

It was a great find at a local store and I had never seen one before. It was out and about for a long time after I got it and then it hid for about 8 hours and then swam around like crazy again. Just hadn't seen many "black" wrasses in stores before.

Frog guy can you explain your lime green wrasse to me? I have one that was sold as a green wrasse. Hides most of the time, even buries in the sand. Looks exactly like a dragon wrasse without the rooster crown. Same markings in the face, same long fins, same nasty little teeth poking out of it's mouth. Has a tendency to grab sanails by their foot and knock em against the glass until they fall out of the shell. Good eatins I guess. Sound anything like yours?
