I have all sorts of pistols. People might laugh, but the one I use for my home defense is a Browning .22 with a bull barrel. Holds plenty of ammo and I can shoot the wings off a fly with it. It is the single most accurate weapon I own. I also have a glock .40 which is a good gun, but as far as accuracy goes, I am more proficient with the .22.

The .22 round, while small, is one of your more deadly rounds. It has a tendancy to bounce around once it enters a target. It is also a good target gun as ammo is super cheap.
