Thread: Pulsating Xenia questions

    Default Pulsating Xenia questions

I've put pulsating Xenia in my nano, I acclimated it for about 30 Min. and it was relatively o.k. The next morning the Stalk had shrunk to less than half of its original size and the color changed from a pinkish to a purpleish. The ends are still open but not pulsating, i have it placed near the surface on a rock and the current isn't to strong (I don't think) but the stalk is bending in half. Do i have a problem or is it still acclimating?

Xenia doesn't travel well. Its not unusual for it to go into shock when moved. The biggest problem with Xenia in a nano is light. Its almost 100% photosynthetic and most nanos don't have enough light for them. Just keep an eye on them. The other thing I would do is check the pH. Xenia like a high pH and as a matter of fact they act like a natural pH meter. The faster they pulse, the higher the pH. Also check your alkalinity. Chances are if the pH is low, so is the alkalinity.

My Alk is at 10, my ph sits at around 8.2 I have about 40W of 50/50 lighting for my 5 gal. I'll keep my eye on it though.

Mine will stop pusing and just extend the arms way out durning the day...but towards the evening they well retract and begin pulsing. It seems the most I dose of B-Ionic the more they pulse so that would support the higher alk.

I've done a little bit of research and came across Potassium Iodide Solutionand how it plays an important role in enhancing a coral`s ability to adapt to rapid changes in light intensity and spectrum. Would this help my problem, if so will it mess with any of my other parameters?

I've also just remebered that the power in my aparment went out in the middle of the night when i got them, i have no idea how long it was out. Would lack of watermovement also have a effect on my Xenia and if it did is there still hope?
