My question is:

When using muratic acid to clean something (an empty tank in this case), is there anything I should or shouldn't do? Will it damage the silicone seals. It has scale on the glass that vinegar and/or scraping will just not get out. Any suggestions? (Other than "Go to h&*!" for posting a topic like that! )

I use it constantly to clean pump impellers, etc. i don;t believe you have any concerns regarding damage to silicone or glass. More than anything b cautious regarding skin, eyes, and lungs. One small inhale of this stuff will sting like a SOB!

Start with a dilution of 50% with water - that will still probably be strong enough to remove the scale.

I "Soaked" my tank in vinegar (bought 1 gallon jugs of vinegar from Walmart, set tank on side with build up, poured enough to cover side until it almost ran out the tank, waited for 24-48 hours, came back and took a soft bristtle scrub brush and it came off real easy and then turned the tank and did the next side.)

But no....I've heard of people using it without any ill side effects, never have myself though was too worried about my acrylic but you have glass. I would personally put a little drop on the corner first and let it sit for a short time and then clean that up and make sure that it isn't going to turn your glass foggy before I did the whole tank.

The vinegar DID get it all off and there was some coriline that was pitted in the acrylic it was soo deep and it got that out. now I'm sanding and resurfacing the acrylic to make it look like glass again.


Just be very careful with that stuff!!!!!!

A cup in the tank...you got my attention quick enough!

I used Muratic Acid to clean swimming pool parts all the time and never had any problems with the acid hurting seals or plastics. I would do it outside if possible because the fumes from the acid is very strong and will hurt eyes and lungs. Wear gloves because if you have one small cut anywhere on your hand and you get this acid in a cut...ahhh the bad words that can come from a mouth. >_<

Be sure to have plenty of water to dilute the acid. I wouldn't leave anything in the acid full strength for too long either.

No, it won't hurt the seals. Hyst be careful with anything metal like pump shafts.

Just remember add "acid to water just like you outter" (funny how that lame crap is the only thing i remember from 2 years of chem class)
