    Default Mantis & Frogfish

Well I finally found a companion for my Mantis shrimp...a young jet black frogfish. I was worried what would happen if they encountered each other but so far no problems. Since the peacock mantis that I have is a smasher who's prey of choice are snails and crustaeans I beleive that this may work out.

BTW they are in a 12g eclipse right now.

sweet! i heard of someone else trying that same combination i believe on grimreefers.com. i'll be interested to see how this works out, i have a 5' female peacock in a 16G cube, she's been together with a striped damsel for about a month with no problems, but i'll bet that frogfish set you back a bit more than 3.99.

Donny, that really cool - I've seen the frog fish & similar at LFSs and I am always tempted!

If y'all haven't seen Donny's tanks - they are a great example of your not-so-typical reef tanks ... VERY nice!

I tried feeding feeder mollies once to a smaller smasher mantis I had. The mantis didn't touch a one of them. One of the mollies actually survived being placed in the saltwater and acclimated (they're actually a brackish water fish). The molly ended up living in the tank with the mantis for about 6 months. The mantis never did touch it, so I think you're right that your mantis will leave the frogfish alone. Nice tank and mantis. The frogfish is cool too.

that is a cool setup. one caution, only a couple species of frogfish stay small and suitable for a little setup, and I don't think any of them are black, A. Pictus comes to mind as suitable for that size tank (wartskinned frogfish) so, your little buddy may be moving to bigger quarters soon.

Do a search on reef central, there has been a very nice long extended thread on frogfish called "The Frogfish Files" for well over a year, successes and losses, and so on.. it's a very good read.
"Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind." ~ Jack Handey
