    Default HEB fish food?

does anyone use the "HILL COUNTRY FAIR" seafood mix? it lists the ingredients as shrimp, squid, mussels, clams, and octopus, but says that it's "blanched". i think blanched means slightly cooked in boiling water. so, does this affect the nutritional value?thanks

Yes it does affect the nutritional value. Buy uncooked and make your own.

I make mine up fresh from the HEB seafood market. The guy up here gives me some of the smaller items for free when I tell him what I'm using it for. (clams, mussels)

Abe, sorry to ask on your thread, but I wanted to know if this also is the case for toasted and untoasted nori. I bought a pack at HEB the other day, and its brown. The raw untoasted I get off the internet is green and my fish like it a lot more.

BTW, I only use the presh too. I would be a little weary of seafood that comes all combined in a package.

yea, that's what i figured. our HEB here in San Marcos doesn't have much in the way of a seafood counter. guess it's just another reason to make a trip to austin, might as well hit a few LFS while we're there.hehehe

I had to get the seaweed at a Korean market in Austin. It's Uncooked, dried Nori. Most had some kind of stuff added. This pack was huge and only cost me $2. It would have been $20 at the lfs.

I think "blanched" in cooking terms means it has been dipped in boiling water a few times. I've seen some vegetables cooked this way and I used to do that for when I fed zucchini squash to my freshwater fish. Definately check out the labels on prepackaged stuff. It should list if preservatives have been used which would be bad for adding to a tank.

Some seafood may contain nitrites as a preservative, even the "fresh" foods. You may want to ask the guy at the seafood counter.
