Default Whoo Hoo! UMHB going to Division 3 National Championship

The University of Mary Hardin Baylor (of Belton, Texas; ranked 8th in the conference) knocked off number one seed Mount Union in Ohio today (it snowed all day) by a score of 38 to 35 for a chance to go to the Division 3 National Championship Game to be held at the Scagg Bowl in Salem, Virginia next Saturday. UMHB scored with less than two minutes in the game and held Mount Union on their next posession for the wim.

My daughter is a freshman this year and plays flute in the band. They will find out this next week if they will be taking the band to the National Championship game.

Mount Union has been playing football since 1893 and has won 7 National Championships in the past 10 years (a Division 3 record) and lost last year in the finals. Whereas UMHB has been playing football since 1997.

    Sweet!

I used to go to UMHB... I hated Old Testament Survey... my prof was not a nice man... but I had a great time while I was there.

They started the football program in 1998. In just seven short years they will be playing for the national championship for Division 3 Football.

Not only is that just simply amazing, but this last game was a true miracle. Playing at Mount Union's home staidum in the snow with a Freshman starting quarterback (the 1st string QB is out with injuries) and falling behind by 14 points, UMHB stormed back (scoring 17 unanswered points) and with less than a minute left in the game, on fourth down and 11 at the 25 yard line, the QB threw a jump ball into the end zone and the Tight-end came down with the winning TD! UMHB then held Mount Union by sacking their QB on the 40 and time expired. For all of the details on this game (along with an audio clip of the winning TD reception), go to www.d3football.com web site and enjoy (if you are a Cru fan that is).

Well my daughter called me last night and said they were taking the band to the game (I knew they would)! They are practicing a new routine all this week. She said they will be leaving on Thursday by charter bus for the 16 hour trip (can anyone say, "Road Trip!"). They will spend the night in Nashville, TN and arrive at Salem, Virginia on Friday for more practice. The game starts at 10 AM CST and will be broadcast on ESPN2. She said she didn't know when they would be coming back, but that she would be home by Christmas!

    More to come...

    Go Cru!!!

Oh well, the Cru came so close but fell short 28 to 21 when our quaterback on 4th and 3 with 48 seconds left in the game was sacked inside Linfields 20 yard line. It was a great game and hard fought! It could have gone either way and Linfield was very suprized with how good a team UMHB fielded. Our starting quarterback is a sophmore who got hurt in the first round. He played part of the second half. However, the suprize was true Freshman quarterback Josh Welch who stepped in to the starting role during the first week of the playoffs and led the Cru to the National Championship game. I see more great games ahead for both of these players.

The previous three games that Linfield played, they scored a minimum of 52 points in each game. In the final game, the score was 21 to 13 (UMHB had the PAT blocked) at half time. In the third quarter, UMHB scored a TD and made the two-point conversion to tye the game at 21 all. UMHB held Linfield scoreless until the middle of the fourth quarter when UMHB had to punt and the punter failed to get the punt off. Linfield then got the ball inside UMHB's 20 yard line and scored a TD on the ensuing drive. UMHB then got the ball back and marched down the field to inside the 20 yard line but QB Josh Welsh was sacked in an all out blitz on fourth down ending a chance to tye the game.
