"Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean ? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind." ~ Jack Handey

Well, that's a bit dissapointing, I was under the impression that I was buying frogspawn.....but I was at Aquadome the other day and they had several peices with multiple tips on the tenticles and they were calling them torch corals.....are people just confused?

Yes. Also some corals go by many different "common" names depending on who you are talking to. That is why I like scientific names, even though the latin is hard to pronounce and remember to spell, a Euphyllia glabrescens is always a Euphyllia glabrescens (Torch Coral). Check out http://www.saltwaterfish.com/m-coral/Torch-Coral.html for further info on your new addition.

I have seen them confused too. It sure does make it difficult when you are trying to learn these things. I purchased a "Torch" at the meeting - yes, I am sure thats what it is because Alex told me so, and it has a mouth on it. Does frogspawn have a mouth as well?

    LOL Richard! :-D

ElmO, its a very nice torch - don't be too disappointed.

I just read something last night by Eric Borneman about misidentification of corals. This one is pretty obvious. When it comes to acroporas and other SPS you are lucky to get something properly identified at all. It usually takes a dead coral , a microscope, and an expert to properly ID one. Borneman said he can usually ID one about 50% of the time.

You got it all wrong gary, it's REAL easy to ID acroporas.

There are blue acropora, there are green acropora, there are brown acropora... and there are 'insert clever catchy name so you can sell it for 10X what you paid for it' acropora ;)
