    Default Foam live rock

    Hi everybody.
I just wanted to come out of lurk mode real quick to ask your opinions on something.
I have seen some discussion recently about using "Great Stuff" expandable foam to make a live rock background in a tank.
Has anyone here ever tried it or know someone who has. I am very curious as to the end result.
    TIA
    Joseph

It sounds like the polyurethane foam that you use for weatherizing outdoor electric outlets. I hasven't researched it but my question would be whether it has enough porosity for the critters like bacteria that live inside LR. Some of them, like nitrobacter, need tiny pores with almost no oxygen.

I would be worried about my fish ripping it up as they feed.

I never thought about using something like that for sculpting a saltwater tank background before. Something else to think about is styrophoam. It may sound silly, but its often used for some of the more attractive backgrounds in other tanks, such as South American, and African freshwater tanks. A lot of guys on Cichlid-Forum.net have purchased large pieces of styro, shaved/carved it down to the way they want it, custom paint and seal it, and use whatever means they choose to attach the background to the glass. You may look into that as well (cheap too ;) )
