How high to mount overflow...

Ok so I just made two 3 sided overflow boxes for my tank. The boxes measure 8x3...they will be toothless. This should provide more than enough flow for the 100 gallon.

Real question is....how far above the "rim" of the overflow will the water rise? Should I glue these on directly level with the bottom of the upper trim? This will leave no gap, but might make the water so high that it hights the center brace.

So knowing how far the water rill rise over the edge of the overflow would really be a valuable tidbit of information....any help?


P.S. With 11 inches of linear area per overflow and no teeth, I'm guesing the water won't rise more than perhaps an eigth of an inch over the edge.....

Can't you slot them and use nylon hardware to attach, that way you can adjust as necessary.

Disregard, just realized what you meant by a 3 sided. Why did you go toothless anyway. Are you going to use anything to keep stuff from going into the overflow that you may not want to.

It will rise a little more than 1/8 inch to overflow because of surface tension. The water may thin out after it starts to flow, depending on how level you are on the top of the box and on return flow volume. Anyway you can test it in something before the permanent mount?

PROBLEM!!!

I test fit the thing in the tank at work...the box is totally square i checked. However, due to the silicon in the corners of the tank, it makes the box cady corner and wably....should I just smooth out the sharp corner of the overflow into a circular/rounded shape??

yes you need to cut the corners so it will fit flush with the tank. all the over flows that i build have teeth at one inch. the water comes up about 1/2 inch on the teeth. in your case you should have the overflow about 1 inch under the center plate [ center surport] that way the 1/2 inch over the dam will clear the center plate and still not have a water line on the outside of the tank. hope that helps some. dan
