Thread: Pump recommendation

    Default Pump recommendation

Before everyone crucifies me, I purchased the current pump for my wet/dry when I was brand new, and before I joined this website and had any sense. Anyhow, it's a Rio 3100 on a 72 gallon bowfront. It's pushing enough water, but it's so **** noisy, and the general consensus is that they suck and are unreliable. I need a submersible, similar dimensions to the 3100, with less noise and no more heat than what the Rio puts out. I was looking at the Quiet One pumps advertised by Foster & Smith. Any feedback?

Not sure what the Rio 3100 is rated at but you could get an equivelant Mag pump and be fine. Never used the Quiet One but read some bad stuff about them before. Been using Mags for years and have been very happy with them.

A MAG 9.5 should do the trick

I just got a Quiet One a few weeks ago and was disappointed. The name is not accuarate. Mine is a lot louder than my Mag 12. I tried several things to quiet it, but none worked. They do push a lot of water for the watts they use, though (the 3000 uses 40 watts for 780 gph at 0 head) so they shouldn't add much heat. I understand they need large diameter plumping or the flow drops off quickly. I used 1 1/4" vinyl tubing. They don't seem to be as well built as the Mags either. Too bad, I was hoping to solve some heating issues.
