I reached into my tank just a few minutes ago to straighten a tipped over coral. Right before my finger touched the water, it shocked me. Nothing bad, but like static electricity. Is this normal. It has never happened before. I know this time of year, it is dry and there is a lot of static electricity, but in my tank? Any similar experiences?

Do you have a grounding probe in your tank? If not, get one. That will eliminate that.

I do not have a grounding probe. I guess I oughta break down and buy one, huh?

This happened to me once and turned out to be a bad power head. My GFI outlet kept tripping for no reason, so I started moving my equipment one by one to another outlet. Once I moved the power head it stopped tripping. When I reached in the water I felt a miled tingelling. I'm guessing that the seal in it was just starting to ware out but the electrical parts were not fully making contact with the water, so the current was very low. It did not seem to bother any of the fish, but I removed it before it fully wore out and fried everything. Be carfull if that is the case that it does not get worse.

Lowes sells plug in GFCI's for about $10.

Only bad thing about em is they won't reset themselves if the power goes out and your powerheads won't turn back on. I learned this AFTER I had bought 2 of the fancy outdoor $25 ones
