Thread: Pinning Anemones?

    Default Pinning Anemones?

what do you guys think about pinning an anemone between two pieces of live rock to where the anemone cant get out but is not harmed in the process? would the stress of not being able to move around be a cause for the anemone's death? any ideas or comments, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

As soft as their bases are I wouldn't think it be possible. The way I figure they move for a reason, I put mine in the area of the tank where I would like for it to be and hope it don't move across the tank.

I think you would have a hard time pinning an anemone in one place to where it couldn't move around if it really wanted to. If you did, you would probably damage it so bad it would die. If it didn't die from being crushed, it could get stressed out due to too much light or water flow it doesn't like. Anemones move around simply because they are looking for a location they like, usually depends on lighting and water flow. If they find a spot they like they will usually stay put although some may like to roam around.

One of the stores down here has them sitting in 2 inch pieces of large diameter PVC. There were several different types of anemones and they were all sitting in the PVC on the substrate. I don't know that this makes them happy campers, but they appeared to stay put.

Yeah, I've seen that somewhere once before as well. I don't think it is very practical/attractive to have in your display tank though.

Anemones foot/basal disc is very flexible. Trying to make it stay put will either injure the animal or they will just ooze out - this is one of the prime reasons anemones are tough to work into a reef tank scenario.

I can give you this advice for LTAs - dig a small depression in the sand almost to the glass - place the anemones foot towards the depression and line the area round it with small rocks and place a chunk of live rock over part of the foot towards the back but not so it's pressing on it. He should attach to the glass and stay put after that.

FWIW bubble tips seem to be about the best for staying put once they find a spot to their liking.
