One-armed shrimp

Hi everyone!

I purchased a Coral-Banded shrimp yesterday. He made himself right at home, racing up and down over the live rock. I was so proud! :-D
Not even an hour after adding him to the tank, I noticed one of his two pincer "arms" was missing! :shock: I found the pincer stuck in the LR. He seems to be doing fine without it, but will he always be one-armed? I've heard they grow back missing appendages when they molt. Is this correct? I've added Iodine to the tank, which is what I've read shrimp need to molt. Anything else I should do?

Yeah, your shrimp will grow another arm, unless it dies of iodine overdose

really there's just no reason to add heavy metals to your tank; okay, maybe iodine has some use to marine animals, but do you have a test kit? Like a lab-quality way of measuring trace metals? I sure don't , and I've never added any metals to my tank, but I'm certain if I sent a sample to a lab, I'd come up higher than NSW levels in all metals. They're in salt, municipal water, food, dead animals, etc...

It will grow back. At least mine(my shrimp) did. It scared me lifeless the first time he molted. It looked just like him. Everything was intack. Aren't we in an amazing hobby?

LMAO!!! :-D Josh that is the funniest/weirdest thing i think ive ever heard in this hobby! its really amazing how our little animals are able to be a frog hair away from death but are able to stick it out. both of yall keep us posted on how ur little guys are doin!

Joshua - what a sad tale. I nearly fell of my chair laughing at the image of this little body with eyes. :-o Glad he's okay, though. Mine hasn't molted yet, but the LFS told me he'd molted just a couple of days before I got him. He's doing great, waving his good "arm" at everything that moves. I've named him Bandit (just could not resist!). He was racing all around the aquarium when I got up this morning, so his mobility is definitely not affected.
