Hello,
I've been gone for quite some time. I shut down my tanks and sold my gear when I left for Iraq back in 2007.
I'm not back home just yet as I have been in Djibouti Africa for the last 2 years. Every chance I get I go to the beach I take my snorkel gear with me.
About 5 weeks ago I turned down the wrong street and happen to see a local shop that sells plate glass. I stopped and checked it out as I've been looking for a way to get a smallish tank out here.
They have 6mm plate glass so I ended up building a tank that is 48x15x15. Picked up a bunch of reef spectrum LEDs for SPS and LPS, built a 25-ish gallon sump with as much ceramic media and bio balls as I could fit. Fabbed up a algae scrubber and set up a nice skimmer with O3 into the sump. At this point I'm in the live rock curing stage but it was only out of the ocean for maybe 45 min so it should be OK here in the next 2 weeks. I've been watching my cycle start to go into the downward swing.
Once its up and going I'll snap some pics. I've been out of this so long any words of wisdom will be appreciated.
Access to water and livestock is easy however access to supplies and gear is non existent unless I order it and wait the 3-5 weeks for mail.
Djibouti doesn't have any known aquariums established and zero shops selling any support equipment. That being said these people don't even know how to care for a dog let alone an aquarium. This is still a 3rd world country.
It is being slowly built up by foreigners so maybe Djibouti will become the next UAE or Qatar one day.
