Hello Maast,

Just wanted to go ahead and start a thread to document my tank on this forum. Not really a build thread as it's already built but I wanted to post some videos of my old tank and my current 215-gallon.

My old 125-gallon system was maintained for almost 3 years with no water changes. Here's an old video of the tank before I shut it down and upgraded to my current 215-gallon.

http://youtu.be/GD7QrXICias

Here's my current 215-gallon, it's 3 years old but I've been without water changes for the last 2. The video is a little old but I'll update with a newer one in the next month or so. There have been some changes.

Looks great. What's your secret for no water changes?

Looks great. What's your secret for no water changes?

I'm not sure there was ever intent to not do water changes. I just listened to my tank and slowly I was able to go further between water changes until I was able to remove them entirely.

I consider myself a lazy reefer. Why do water changes at all if the two goals of water changes, nutrient reduction and replenishment of trace elements, can be achieved via other methods? Sure, I understand there are a myriad of elements that are not being replenished by the CaRX or amino acid dosing but whatever they may be, my old 125-gallon didn't require it for 3 years and my current 215-gallon hasn't required it yet either so far.

Am I delusional to think this might work forever? No, I feel like eventually there might be a trace element that will need to be added to the system... Something I can't test for and don't even realize the importance of until it is depleted... But until then, I'm pretty happy not doing water changes for a few more years. https://s3.amazonaws.com/tapatalk-emoji/emoji4.png For the interim, I added an annual Triton test to monitor trends over the year. If I am deficient in something or have an over abundance of something else, I'll do a water change or dose if I see any issues with the tank. Otherwise, I'm going to assume that the deficiency or over abundance isn't significant. I just haven't needed to do either yet!

Tank is maintained with a large skimmer, CaRX, biopellets, GFO, and carbon. I dose aminos about 2x/week and feed my fish like there's no tomorrow. I believe in high input of food, high export of wastes. I don't use filter socks, vacuum the sand, or even vacuum out the sump ever. I think the calcium reactor plays a huge role in no water changes. Most can control nutrients very easily by using carbon dosing and GFO but to be able to replenish foundation elements and some important trace elements that you don't really get from 2-part is I think what makes the difference.

I test personally with my Hanna Meters for alk and phosphate. I use Red Sea for everything else, Nitrate, Ca, Mg, Iodine, and Potassium.

Current FTS. I removed the black background and experimenting with a blue gradient going from light blue at the top to dark blue at the bottom.

What I have brewing in my QT. Don't worry, they were actually QT'ed in a tub. I took this video when I put them temporarily in a 30-gallon as I switched the tubs. Two of the achilles are going to friend's tanks.

Here's a more recent video I took of the tank around last October. It's more of a moving FTS.

As good as the video is, it doesn't do justice to how beautiful this tank is in person. Looks awesome Ty!
How are you liking the blue background? I feel like you lose some of the pop of your coral and fish with the blue.

Hey Dean! I'm definitely digging the blue. It does lose some of the pop for colors but not terribly. The thing I like the best is the illusion that the tank just keeps going... Like there could be more ocean behind it.

Shot a video of the fish back in the tank. I'm still working on painting the background so ignore the cables. Sorry so blue, I'm still new to shooting video under LEDs.

Fish photos with a borrowed DSLR and macro lens. This is really my first time experimenting with a real camera so forgive any rookie errors.

Oh he does! But I'll let him take over that patch for himself.

I'm using a borrowed Nikon D5200 with a Tamron 90 mm macro lense. I'm planning to buy a setup myself and a friend let me borrow it to try it out. This week has been the first week I've ever gotten to play with a DSLR so I'm on a sharp learning curve. It's got a lot more buttons than my camera phone does. :p

Love the photos of the corals. I bought a used Lester A. Dine 105 mm macro lens a few years ago for $200.00. It was originally designed for use during oral surgery and takes some amazing macro shots. I have even been able to get clear pics of the tip of a tail on a newborn seahorse with it, although it took some practice getting to know all the different settings on my DSLR.

I am a DSLR newb in every way so it was fun to play with one for the first time. My first shots were awful... like disposable camera from the 90s awful.

I think being able to play with one and getting some hands on experience with it has made me decide to finally buy one. Just another way to enjoy a hobby that I'm already so obsessed with.

Thanks! Always happy to talk tank if you're ever in Austin.

It doesn't hurt that I usually have a ton of frags on me so the trip can be a two-for-one deal, see the tank and buy some frags while you're at it. ;)

Sounds like a plan. Its been awhile since I've been in Austin. I used to be the district manager for Nabisco in that area. So I would either leave early to beat traffic back to San Antonio, or just hang out at Aquatek and the AquaDome to kill time before heading home.

So I ended up modding the Ocean Revive T247 fixtures. I swapped out all my cool white 10k diodes for warm white 3.5k diodes. I also replaced the useless red and green diodes for the warm white diodes as well.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160409/3d7b588b1363e7af2ce8923bbf81716f.jpg

I wanted to have a better useable spectrum and get rid of the Windex look I got from my LEDs as they are too focused on the blues/whites. I missed the warmer colors I used to get (red/orange/yellow) with my MHs.

Here is a video I shot after swapping the diodes to warm white.

I finally got a chance to build my light rack and added the T5 bulbs I've been wanting to add to the LEDs for supplemental coverage and spectrum.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160418/1b4453ae8d44e820bada9d428ddcb9f0.jpg

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160418/0764695cb02b87e8b205285312f7abe8.jpg

I used shelf track from home depot.

http://m.homedepot.com/p/Rubbermaid-70-in-Black-Twin-Track-Upright-FG4B8900BLA/100149366

I used the pieces and constructed the light rack. The 3 LED fixtures sitting in the middle are the Ocean Revive T247s with all the 10k, green, and red diodes replaced with 3.5k warm white diodes. The T5s are run with ATI ballasts and are 80w, 60" T5 bulbs. The two front ones are ATI Coral+ and ATI Purple+, with a single ATI Blue+ in the back.

I call it my ATY Poorman's Powermodule. [emoji23] All I have to say is holy moly, it's bright! [emoji3]

Looks good man. Like yourself, I discovered that LED's regardless of manufacturers, still don't hit the blue spectrum as well as T5's can. To compensate, I added T5's and couldn't be happier. This current tank I have, I had to get my Coralvue ballast in for repairs for like 6 months, it's a long story. Once I replaced the ballast with a BRS one and turned on my t5's, I noticed in a couple of days new colors and more PE on my corals. I currently run a blue + and purple + on my tank. I have a spot for one more T5' that I need to get a ballast for. Thinking about running a blue + on that one as well.

FarmerTy
Mon, 18th Apr 2016, 10:35 AM
Yeah, it has been an unbelievable difference with the inclusion of the T5s. Did you get the ATI ballasts from BRS or one of their Workhorse ones?

If you got the room, I say shove another T5 in there. Haha.

Much less, like maybe 1/4-1/3 of the recommended amount.

Reefnub
Tue, 19th Apr 2016, 08:38 PM
Hmmm maybe I should cut down on the amount of fluid out of my pellet reactor and get back to using gfo and changing gfo on and monthly basis and the cyano will go away. I use pearls biopellets and it's the 1st time using them. Also and I'm at the recommended dose. I also use a reef dynamics recirculating biopellets reactor. I guess I hadn't found that balance yet.

FarmerTy

I still run new GFO monthly with biopellets.

When running the recommended amount of biopellets, my SPS have always suffered so I generally run 1/3 and monitor my nitrates. I still like to keep about 5-10 ppm of nitrates if possible.

Thank you BBQ.

I'm a big fan of my MTC Procal combined with the Aquarium Plants carbon doser as the regulator. Just a heads up, I heard the Procal is on a decent wait for getting one built. The owner builds each one himself.

Keep in mind that you'll also need to keep nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) in check to competely get rid of water changes.

If you're ever in Austin and want to check out the tank, hit me up via PM.

No problem. Keep in mind I have a pretty robust fish population and feeding regiment as well and 1/4 recommended is just perfect.

FWIW, everytime I first start my biopellets up again, my SPS aren't too fond of it but as they whether the first couple months, its smooth sailing after that. I just think as it ramps up, it comes online very quickly when it reaches critical population size for the bacteria and this initial burst of bacterial growth drops the nitrate level very quickly. To me, it's almost unavoidable stress but once they acclimate to the lower nitrate level, they are happy as clams.

To me it's the same as when you first run GFO on a system that has a phosphate issue. No matter how delicate you do it, the initial quick lowering of phosphates can usually stress corals.

What were the symptoms you were noticing with the colony? Any lack of polyps? Any lack of color? STN from the bottom up?

Reefnub

The loss of skin came from the lower section which you can see in the 2nd pic if you zoom in and was spreading. This also happened to a Millie which I had to do the same. And a couple other corals and frags. I did change from bionic to Aquaforest and alk dropped also but this started before that and started right after pellets stopped. Thanks for the kudos and yea it was a crazy ordeal as I've never had to do that before and kinda sucks the same time as it was 4 yrs or 5 to grow that from a 1/2" frag. Anyhow yes skin loss on bottom section and I also noticed 2 of the small fish would sleep right there also so I'm not 100% sure if pellets or being irritated but how do other corals have the same happen to them. Anyways pellets it is as I've always had success with ecobak pellets.

Hmmm, well when in doubt, I'd do the same thing you are doing and just return everything to status quo.

Any chance of a parasite? Notice any bite marks? Red bugs?

What was your nitrate level after a couple months of no biopellets?

Reefnub
Mon, 15th Aug 2016, 09:00 PM
No red bugs and no bites, could have been a disease but who am I to say. I think I caused the issue trying to get nitrates and get better health and color but all I really needed to do was pull some pellets. I dosed nitrates and got to 5 but looked liked to corals didn't like it even when raised slowly over a 2 week period. I've been concentrated on alk getting stable and water changes and gfo. I haven't checked nit lately but I'm sure is low.

Thanks Justin. Main reasons for me was to get a dual-stage regulator, something with a stainless steel body that won't corrode or rust over time, and no audible click.

This will be the last regulator I'll ever need so its nice to know that. It'll outlast me! :)

Thanks, I still stare in awe with the Colorado Sunburst. Such a stunner and actually lives up to the crazy pics you see online. My first split I sold about 5 months ago. It's getting so big that I would imagine another split is coming soon.

I don't really have a salt brand I run with since I don't do water changes. I just buy whatever is cheapest... which is usually Coralife at the LFS.

I aim for 7.5 dKh for alk.

What intensity are your lights running at? Is your tank bright or? Trying to find a happy medium still with my light percentage. I ramp 4hrs to 55% then drops to 35% when the 4-T5s kick on for 4hrs 300par then ramp down again from 55 to 3% leds by them selves at 55 gives me 200 par or little less. What's your thoughts? I have 6 hydra 52 and 4 T5 over a 5' tank. I will have to say you have one of the most beautiful tanks I have seen and perfectly balanced with coral and fish. Love the pics and videos! Can't wait to see what happens in another year or 2. Thanks

FarmerTy
Wed, 5th Oct 2016, 09:35 PM
Thanks Reefnub!

For lights, I only run the cheap Ocean Revives and 3 T5s so no ramping here. Middle of the tank is 350 par, top is 400-500, bottom around 150-200 par. I don't feel ramping is really needed but it does have a cool effect for the owner though to see it at different par levels.

The mix of T5s and LEDs should be treating you pretty well I'd imagine. Do you not like your results?

Reefnub
Wed, 5th Oct 2016, 09:52 PM
The problem I get is sps growing away from the lights. So I'm thinking I should leave it alone. I finally found a setting I like and stick with. I can only run my t5 4hrs without a chiller because it gets to 83 temp wise.

That's weird that they are growing away from the lights but I know nothing of the hydras. Perhaps it's a color spectrum issue?

I feel you... my T5s definitely warmed the water up when I installed them... though nothing compared to my 3 400-watt MHs back in the day. Have you tried just adding a clipon fan blowing over your sump to keep temps down?

Reefnub
Wed, 5th Oct 2016, 09:57 PM
I need to get a fan to blow on the sump and see what that will do. I have a small fan blowing on the top of the tank for the period the t5 are on but must not be enough air flow.

FarmerTy
Wed, 5th Oct 2016, 09:58 PM
I use the $10 clip on walmart fans. Hard thing though now is finding them in stores as they clear out their fan selections come Fall/Winter.

Reefnub
Wed, 5th Oct 2016, 10:04 PM
I think corals grow better under the warm white instead of the cool white but that's just my opinion. I'll have to check Walmart for a fan and hopefully they still have them out. Thought about buying a chiller as my 12 yr old chiller finally died but I may try a fan 1st before spending $900

FarmerTy
Wed, 5th Oct 2016, 10:11 PM
Fans kept me mostly cool even with the 400-watt MHs. You just top off a lot more.

Warm whites definitely grows corals better, lower spectrum.

Haha, thanks for the heads up Alton. I'm actually getting it from Mike and he says it's basically an adult. He said it does nip at corals but mainly softies, none of which I have. I will say though that if it starts eating acros or gonis... it will not be a long-term resident in my tank!

Big boy is back in the tank. I wanted to let the smaller angels and tangs get acclimated before releasing him back in. He's grown quite a bit in the tub... Looks like a manatee swimming in my tank.

Its like a dessert for him. He doesn't gorge himself on it or else I wouldn't have a colony but I think he likes to wash his food down with it. Either that or he's using it as a toothpick to clean the mysis out of his teeth.

Yeah, I saw a full grown flame and it blew me away. Didn't know they got that big. I like the idea of the mccoskers harem.

FWIW, I've been told don't bother with pairs for wrasses. Harems are the right approach as that is what they do naturally. In pairs, the female will eventually turn male and you'll have a dead wrasse somewhere as they will fight for dominance.

FarmerTy
Thu, 3rd Nov 2016, 08:51 AM
Or get a bunch of males from different species and have a variety of them swimming in your tank.

I'm doing that but just with the flame and exquisite.

Well, saw a challenge and dived head first into it.

I introduce you to acropora abrotanoides, aka the acro that will turn brown and die on you, and acropora spathulata, aka why did you just throw money away?

They both have terrible survival rates but I thought it would be a fun challenge. I actually had an abrotainoides growing about 2 years back but lost it when I shuffled some acros around. Hopefully I'll get growth and color off this guy aa well.

Let me introduce you to my new experiment, can I keep an abrotanoides alive... [emoji6]

So, lots of small updates that I hadn't gotten a chance to post about.

Got my 3 purple queen anthias from Gig'em, the QT extraordinaire. They are all eating and have been added to the tank.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161202/1a64033406fa7fff45be9e25e796916a.jpg

I also had a wonderful gift from a client that bought me a flame wrasse as a thank you gift. When I went to pick it up, I saw this gorgeous blue star leopard wrasse and picked that up as well.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161202/99d0d27371558dace0998255f52a4b1b.jpg

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161202/9d80b7fb8bb5d639ac3f8481369749d9.jpg

The exquisite wrasse decided to try to mate with all the purple queens and was banished. He did look amazing when flashing all the brilliant colors though.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161202/ea35cbcc092d18a55d208b33fc4c3125.jpg

The Achilles tang experiment may be over soon. No matter what size UV sterilizer, having as many fish as I do is not going to work with keeping an Achilles as the ich gets worst every day. I caught him out and will treat him for ich for the next person who wants to try to run ich free. The powder blue may be shortly behind but he's handling it better than the Achilles so I'll keep him for now.

Hopefully those purple queens will continue to eat with all the tankmates. They are so shy and timid.

I wanted an Achilles so bad but they just don't seem to not live in an ich management tank. Same with the powder blue. I have found the beauty of angelfish so I can live without them.
Is the tank chopped down yet?

FarmerTy
Fri, 2nd Dec 2016, 11:30 PM
They are super timid but were attacking some food today more aggressively so that is a good sign.

Yeah, Achilles and powder blues are just a bad idea in ich-maintained. I wish I could have run the full gamut of my fallow period and kept them but down the road, I don't think I could have maintained it.

Chopped my first 10 pieces for the buyer. We're going to do batches of 10 as his tank gets acclimated slowly to the increase in corals. It was actually pretty fun to give some colonies a good hair cut.

Haha, at first when you said that Justin, I was like, who's this Matrix coral farming company and what is this cool acro they named the "evil hunter bots". Then I realized you were just talking about the movie. Hilarious! I always have corals on the brain.

This tank has my vote for tank of the year for its production and its results on growing sps to large colonies.

Yeah, had it for awhile now but finally put it in a spot to grow out. Here it was in April, versus now. Its amazing what giving corals decent light and flow would do instead of just throwing it in a corner. :o

I second the tank of the year and I see fit that all sps tank owners are to be able to have a frag of each coral in ones tank that has won the tank of the year which helps with the trimming issues one would have with such a tank. Oh and drink beer as winner of tank of the year trims those trees. LOL

Awesome corals and fish! Hope my tank comes around and starts purking up like it should and looks half as nice as yours. Cheers

Man, that's rough. Can I formally withdraw now before I have to divide my entire tank amongst the fine members of MAAST? :p

Now, the beer part I'm always game for!

Just takes time Reefnub, yours will look amazing before you even realize it!

Somehow one person planning to be in Austin this week from Houston turned into a giant group buy from the fine reefers there.

Some good boys and girls are getting some nice frags under the tree for the holidays! ;)

Wow, what I nice collection of corals. Are they from a local Houston reefer or a store front in Houston that was visiting?

Hey Justin, sorry, I may have worded it funny. Those are frags people from Houston ordered from me. I cut them all yesterday and they are going to be picked up by one of them next week to distribute amongst some other reefers in Houston. It somehow turned into a giant group buy for Houston, courtesy of my tank. :)

I might just setup something similar in San Antonio in a couple months and use it as an excuse to come to a meeting finally.

Get you FarmerTy corals and stay for the meeting! ;)
