Is this okay? Should i be cleaning the skimmer body? Does the skimmer need to be shielded from light?

I always had algae in my skimmer. Usually once every other month I'd go in with a soft pad and clean it out

Algae? I was talking about alfea.

Thanks. Ill def give it a wipe down. You think light has anything to do with it? I have a led on 24/7 facing the sump.

Yes, I have the same issue. I put a piece of black plastic from an old broke overflow to see if it would stop the algae. It did. But the I had a harder time seeing my skimmer to clean it. So I junked it and just keep up with the maintenance. Most of my algae is corraline.
