for the longest time i ran a crap filtration. i did have a bunch of HOB stuff, but it over crowded my tank and it looked horrible. from there i "upgraded" to a wet/ dry using bio balls, but i forgot to let my chick know that the bag full of bio balls near the couch was not trash so out those went.

as a temporary filter i added a carbon filter in the sump until i could either find more bio balls or get a entirely new system. i tend to get lazy at times so the whole temporary filter turned into a permanent filter. i would change those out every so often and be done with it.

now, thanks to lampkind, i have a beefed up filter system. ill take pics in a bit.

i still have the drain tube filtering into a carbon filter, but from there the water trickles down through half wet/ half dry bio balls. under that i have a bunch of macro algae with a bright LED light. that water is then cycled through my huge (its huge to me) skimmer. i didnt have room under my tank so i did add a bucket next to the sump which houses my return pump. oh, i also placed a filter sock over the return on the skimmer and that water is emptied into the side bucket and is then returned back into the tank.

this weekend i will also be adding sand to the bottom of my sump.

Sounds awesome man! Can't wait to see the pics. I'd keep an eye on your nitrates with the bio balls though.

what section of the sump would be receiving the sand?

I was going to add the sand to the entire bottom of the sump. Mine isnt sectioned off.

I'll be honest man, you may want to try to at least section off the skimmer. It'd really stink if some sand got into the impeller.

Not even sure how I could go about doing that.
