View Full Version : 140G Rimless Tank

Francis
Mon, 3rd Nov 2014, 12:16 PM
I recently purchased a used tank from one of the members from ARC. It's a 140G tank with an offset overflow:

25468

It was weird setup so I decided to plug the holes and hired JJ from Zephyr to drill the side glass to create a peninsula type tank.

The stand is made of 1" square tubing and I made a wooden riser to raise the tank about 5.5" higher.
25473

25474

I also put a piece of acrylic for added seal protection.

25475

25476

Test fit the ghost overflow

I used old water from 120G every time I do water change. Also used new Hawaiian black live sand, live rocks that I have been storing in my sump and some that were curing in a holding tank in my garage.

Nice Francis! I used the Hawaiian black in my tank also and love it! I won't use anything other than black sand again.

I used a combination of hard and flex PVC for my plumbing, glued and waited 2 days for the connections to dry up.

25483

25484

Installed hanging kit and rail for my hydra52s

25485

25486

Fill the tank with more dirty water. Lol

Cycled about 3 weeks and parameters were good and stable. Combination of new live sand, live rocks, water from my old tank and microbacter helped the tank to stabilize.

25488

25489

I used a temporary old school sump just to run the water through.

Created a cover for potential jumpers.

Tank is finally at the stage where I feel comfortable to move a livestock in. So I purchased a naso tang at salty's where there was a 25% sale on tangs.

25493

Waited a day and a half, measured parameters then I decided to my lights to the new tank.

25494

25495

Sump and plumbing was finalized.

This is an amazing build. Seen the tank in person (while it was still cycling) and its a great looking tank. I love the shallow reef look. I'm sure your tangs will love it too!

Do u mean on having a shallow tank as oppose to a deep tank. I haven't seen the difference just yet as it is too early to see the difference. I could imagine that the intensity of the light is much stronger for a shallow tank when compared to a deeper tank. But what I like is the shallow tank is easier to access and maintain.

no. sorry. i meant from reefbreeders to hydra. i know hydras are of course much better, but how noticeable was the difference in growth.

I can't quantify it just yet as I have only been using the hydra52 for about 2 months. The reefbreeders did good in growing my corals, the only thing I didn't like is I can't separate and change intensity of the colors individually. With the hydra52 I can do that and it has better color mixtures IMO. Plus controllability is top notch with AI (iPhone, director) compared to the reef breeders remote control. Since the switch I noticed that my utter chaos grew faster and it's at the bottom of a 24" deep tank. However, light is just one aspect, so I'm not 100% certain it's the light that did the growth spurt.

This tank is amazing! Dimension are exactly what I would have if I had the room!

Do you have any concerns with the stand racking? I would think that having a stand that tall made of 1" tubing would require some sort of cross bracing.

Francis

I use the classic 5' rail from Aqua illumination, then I hang it with the EXT AI hanging kit. To make it work I bought .25" thick strip of aluminum, cut it to size and tapped a 10-32 unf thread on the aluminum piece to match the hanging kit thread. Works well, sturdy!

Do you run all colors at 40% or am I reading that wrong. The reason I'm asking is I have 6-hydra52 above my 60x27x27 and I have Lps corals losing color at 50%. At the sand bed and I'm trying to find the happy medium.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Francis
Mon, 23rd Feb 2015, 05:55 AM
My color scheme intensity are as follows:
Royal Blue - 65%
Deep Blue - 50%
Cool White - 35%
Violet - 30%
Red - 30%
Green - 20%
UV - 15%

U have a deeper tank so u may need to increase intensity depending on how far ur light source is from the water column. Corals bleaching doesn't just mean that ur light is too strong, the corals may not also be getting the intensity it needs. So increase ur intensity very slowly. But just watch out as the hydra 52 packs a punch. Having 6 in a 60" tank is quite a bit, I guess you have SPS dominant tank? Good luck!

Francis
Sat, 26th Sep 2015, 06:13 PM
Hooked up the pump and it's virtually silent. My skimmer which barely makes any sound (sicce pump) is now the loudest mechanical component in my sump. So quiet drive indeed is silent. The calibration is easy and the feed mode is an awesome feature. Pump is powerful as I only ran the max at around 50% @ head pressure of approx 5ft.
Form factor is nice and the pump is made of quality material. So far I'm pretty happy with this purchase and I'm glad I got the L1 as I don't have to push the pump harder. I'll get another ecotech battery backup to support this pump.
I'll try to borrow the sound meter at work to quantify how quiet this pump is.

Are you running the reeflink with this pump and your Vortech's. I think we discussed that Neptune does't plan to support the pump. Sucks because the main reason I would get it is to slow the return without shutting it off for feed modes. Really curious how it goes for you.

I'm just running it for now through the driver. I'm still on the fence about buying a Reeflink but I might give in to getting one and get rid of my WXM. We'll see...

I'm on the fence as well. The only reason and I mean the only reason I would get an L1 pump is for dialing down the return so that my food stays in the display longer. It really sucks that Ecotech and Neptune can't get along and come up with a way for the WXM to communicate to the pump. Getting a reeflink would allow the vortechs and return to talk but that is a lot of money to just get them talk and that is it. True you have redundancy of controllers but that is a big chunk for redundancy.

Sadly, because I am a huge of fan of both companies, I might drink the Kool-Aid just to say that when my MP40's go in feed mode, my return slows down to keep the food suspended in the water.

I ended up buying a reef link for mine. Still waiting for my pump to arrive but with radions, mp40s and the Ecotech pump is was not even worth a second though to pick one up.

I use 4 hydra52 positioned approx 10" AWL. It runs at peak about 70%. I can pretty much put SPS even on my sand bed if I have too. But I achieve better coloration it being higher up. The tank is shallow being only 18".

Good luck!

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Are you still at this lighting color scheme? And are your intensities the same as before? The sps colors are amazing and wondering if some of my colors on my lighting are too high and I'm over doing the uv. I'm now at 40% on all lights m, had to drop intensities because I was too high and now I have more color and a few of the browned out corals are getting color and starting to grow.
