I recently bought an mp40 from another maast member. I'm used to internal power heads. Is it normal to hear the motor/dry side running even on lowest setting?

Are they aligned properly?

I barely hear mine @ 40%

Even when my was new out of the box, there was some noise. But it was just a slight humming noise, not much else. How loud is it?

It's a humming I can hear over 20 ft away. It's aligned properly. It's not rattling, ive determine it's aligned. Its gard to explain how loud it is.

It's the hum of the motor.

Yeah, with the internal pumps you give up quite ness for heat dissipation

Used to drive me nutts. lol. It was the loudest on the wave mode. All my vortech pumps were like this. Like Lucky mentioned...some louder than others. MP10, 20 and 40's

I cannot hear both of mine over my overflows....

I bought one new the other used. The used one was a little louder until i replaced all the wetside parts, now i forget which is older....

I always hear ppl not happy with the noise but have no idea what they are talking about.... But yea, if i crank them up to +70% they can be heard from a few feet away..

Speed and setting make a huge difference in my mp40. If I crank it all the way up then, yes, I hear them. On a normal day in my house I do not hear the noise until I am right next to the tank. Other background noises drown it out.

I also replaced the parts in the wet side and it made a difference in vibration. I also ran a mp10 in my office tank. It wasn't noticeable to me in a closed room.

Thank you all. I'll give it some time and replace wet side.

Mine were all quiet as well except in the only mode I liked.. short pulse mode for a wave. This was the noise they made...

"waer.....waer.......waer.......waer......waer..... waer........waer......waer......waer..."

Lol

Is the spacer set to the right thickness of the glass?

slm222
Sat, 16th Nov 2013, 05:23 PM
Yes. It's set to 3/8. Which is the thickness of my tank

I have a brand new mp40 and one that's a year old on my tank. The older one is noticeably louder.

Sometimes when I put mine on. I have to set the outside in line just Wright with the inside or it would make that noise..but when i find that sweet spot i dont hear anything...

I'm fairly certain the noise is normal and I'm just being picky. It pushes a lot of water. I'm going to give it 2-3 weeks or so and if l just can't live with it I'll sell it for what I bought it for.

You are probably like me. Little consistent noises no matter the volume can really irritate me.

My systems in our living spaces are all very quiet as well, virtually no sound from overflows so pretty easy for me to hear anything.

My fishroom is another story. I did not worry about noise.

You hit the nail right on the head rob. In the home or in cars consistent noise like the clicking of a clock drive me crazy. I might be better off with a tunze or something in the tank.

Mr Cob

Yep, I ended up going tunze, was a better option for me anyways because I only wanted a wave. I LOVED my vortechs though, like I said I had several. I went through 4 MP10's on my 85g synced (was awesome), two MP40's and a 20 on my old 220 and a MP40 then 10 on my old biocube....all made that humming noise.

If these pumps were in my fishroom I bet I would not hear them now.

My wife was annoyed with the noise as well.

Tunze is the way to go. I have used all their line of pumps from smallest all the way up to most powerful ones with no noise

+2 I love tunze. I only have two tunze power heads on my 375 gallon. They are hooked up to my apex for random flow and I couldn't be happier. I love the ecotech lights, just not their pumps. The lights have such good spread I'm only running three across my 8 ft tank but that's for another thread. Haha

+3 I am in love with my Tunze as well. I have the 6206 tunze wave box in my 90gal and it has a 1.5-2" wave at all times and it is silent. Everything in my aquarium love it. Also I'm not sure why but since I have had my wave going as hard as it has my torch coral is reaching out 8-9inches. I do not know if this is common but it looks amazing!

I've heard you can pull the vortech sticker off and lube up the rotating peice to quite it down

Anyone try this?

Mr Cob

That's interesting, I'd do it if I thought a pump was broken and it was not under warranty.

I did have one that was rattling and ecotech sent me a new part to repair it and it worked afterwards and the rattling was gone but the "wraer......wraer" noise on short pulse mode was still there. lol

If yours makes the same sound that I'm trying to communicate then I don't think yours is broken.

If it's making a rattling noise like it just isn't seeded correctly then there could be an issue.

I will say I'm not a fan of the noise. After listening to another the noise is normal. I think tunze is in my future. Now I just need to become a charter member to sell this.
