NOAA Proposes Listing 66 Reef-building Coral Species under the Endangered Species Act

NOAA Fisheries is proposing Endangered Species Act (ESA) listings for 66 coral species:

59 in the Pacific
7 would be listed as endangered
52 would be listed as threatened
7 in the Caribbean
5 would be listed as endangered
2 would be listed as threatened
In addition, we are proposing that 2 Caribbean species--elkhorn and staghorn corals--already listed under the ESA be reclassified from threatened to endangered.

Selling, receiving, transporting, or shipping listed species in interstate or foreign commerce is prohibited, even if the specimens were legally held in captivity at the time of listing. For corals currently maintained, it is your responsibility to demonstrate that the animals were already in captivity before the final listing decision. Looks like we will need permits to have reef tanks soon. Especially if you own some of the listed corals.

I've seen this posted elsewhere and it seems like it happens every few years. It gets proposed, then knocked down.

I am not sure who will do the enforcing of these laws? With the Oryx you have Game Wardens enforcing that stupid law and permits.

I am not sure who will do the enforcing of these laws? With the Oryx you have Game Wardens enforcing that stupid law and permits.

They might look at our Maast accounts and go through our tank pics. :D
