I've had this tank a few months and the first time I set it up I did it wrong. It was taken apart sand rinsed and put in bucket, got 80lbs of dry rock and two new bags of sand. Tank was set back up that day. Since then I've added some gsp, some palys, and some anthia. Tank is still running a cycle and is looking good all the time. I got a lot of upgrades I want to make to this tank. The biggest thing I'm learning is patients. I bought my first lps corals today but they aren't in my tank just yet. I'm not ready for them and neither is my tank.

Since an anthia is a beetle, I am gonna guess that you mean anthias, why did you put in more fish during your cycle after the first one did not do so well?

I think he means anthellia.

Looking good man. Starting with new or aggressively rinsed sand makes a big difference!

I got a superman mushroom today and paied for 3 lps corals 1 war, 1 chalice and 1 acan frag. Acan has 2 heads, war coral has 5 and chalice has 11. Plus I got 4 heads of radioactive green dragon eyes. I want to get my corals small so I can watch them grow. Same with my fish. Only thing added was the mushroom.

Tank is looking better by the day. Ammonia is just about 0, nitrates have dropped down to I think 20. I still have what looks like diatoms floating in the water. Other than that its going good. I also picked up two yellow tail damsels yesterday and the corals Ramsey was holding. The green button palys are already open just waiting for everything else.

Added my first fish last weekend which was 2 yellow tail damsels and I lost one on Monday. I added more rock to my tank on tuseday and got 2 clowns today I also added a 3 headed hammer frag which I got from Zack and its already starting to open. I got one yellow tail left and I want him out.

Not sure. It was acting weird. The other one is still alive.

Thanks guys I'm finally listening and doing the right thing even though there's a ton of coral I want to buy as well as fish. I finally got me a better skimmer and its pulling a ton of nasty from my water. I also did my first water change last night which was 5g. I may start doing 10 but I need to figure out why I'm loosing so much water to evaporation. I'm thinking its because I don't have anything on top of the tank other than a canopy.

Water evaporation is a normal occurance. You only have to worry about excessive water loss if your floor is wet.

It's not wet but I'm going through water like crazy. Like 15g every two weeks. I don't have a glass top and that's one issue for evaporation.

About a gallon a day, that's not bad. I think it's about an average number for a smaller tank. I go through about two a day. The surface agitation allows for oxyengenation of the water and heat loss. I've never been a big fan of the glass covered tops. Seems counterintuitive to a normal function of a tank.

Going to reiterate, water evaporation is normal. The comment concerning the wet floor was a joke about a leaking tank.

I guess or just seems like a lot to me. I do need to figure out how to make an ato.

I wouldn't make one, were I you. Either buy one or install one, but don't try making one.

I'm just going to drill the bottom of a 5g bucket put flex line from it to a float valve and that's it.

Installed.

That's what I did. I put my hole low on the side of the bucket so I wouldn't have to worry about having to lift the bucket off the surface of the bench... and I dose kalk through that as well, a hole in the side limits the amount of surry that gets into the line.

I'm going through the bottom not the side and what's surry?

Zack

I think he meant slurry, it's the concentrated kalk that sits on the bottom of the water.

allan

Yep, slurry. I missed the l. I definitely wouldn't worry about that, you're not anywhere close to having to dose anything. One less thing you have to worry about.

I've added a 2 chalice's an acan, rde zoas (6 heads) a hammer frag(3heads) and a war coral. Everything's eating except one of the chalices it is in bad shape and I'm trying to get it to come back.

I finally had a diatom bloom and my tank is ugly as a rhino. There's brown stuff everywhere execpt the sand. My hermits are loving it. Neil is holding my lps till this is through.

diatoms are all gone starting to see a lots of coraline. most of the rocks that are close to the top are almost covered. will be picking up 2 48in whites and 2 48in blues to limit the algea growth im having on my back wall and to give my coral more light.
