Well, it looks like I will be doing a diy light for our 12g nano. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how many leds, and what leds to get? What leds to get like blue to white ratio and any other colors to add to the mix for a full spectrum fixture. Any input is appreciated.

Check out my DIY project on my 20 long thread in the nano tanks. It was full spectrum.

I have a full spectrum set up on my nano (8 gallon)...
- 4 cree cool whites,
- 1 cree blue / fiji blue,
- 2 cree royal blues,
- 2 exotic hyper violet,
- 2 exotic turquoise, and
- 2 exotic deep red.
The cool whites and fiji blue are part of a led fixture I had bought that didn't give me the stand alone color I wanted so I added the other leds to it. All other leds were ordered from ledgroupbuy.com.
I run the turquoise and red on a non-dimmable 350mA driver and the hyper violet and royal blues on a 700mA non-dimmable driver.
I tried loading a pic to show color, but they're all too big right now...

jcnkt_ellis, that is a lot of color. More than I have even heard of... Thanks for the info.
nanoreefer, can you post up a link? I couldn't find it. May not have been looking in the right place.

I was trying to hit the peaks for photosynthesis using a chart similar to below:

i just got a 21 LED controller Kit (http://www.aquastyleonline.com/products/21-LEDs-Controller-DIY-kit.html) from aquastyleonline.com, about a month ago. shipping was faster than expected from Hong Kong, about 1 week. it went together great and worked the first time. it took me about 8 hours to put it all together but it was the first time doing anything like that and i had to learn how to solder better. what i really liked about it was they sent me two extra LEDs in case some didn't work. they all did work perfectly. they also sent me a wire stripper with a gauge. that was awesome, it saved me so much time and looks so much better than if i had done it by my self. my kit has the controller to simulate sunrise, sunset, and i even got some moon lights added in. they will customize the LED colors you want from there selection. So far the controller is working great coming on and off like i want. looks nice to watch it fade in and out. i went with
21 LEDs i got customized
3 - 10k white
5 - 6.5 k white
4 - Violet
5 - blue
4 - royal blue
13 blue / 8 white = 1.625 ratio - I really like the look
ecxatly what i ordered --
21 LED kit (http://www.aquastyleonline.com/products/21-LEDs-Controller-DIY-kit.html) - with 45 degree optics - custom color LEDs - and 7X16in heatsink
Driving board - 12CM Fan (http://www.aquastyleonline.com/products/Driving-Board-Channel-5-with-12cm-fan.html)- with 2 12cm fans - 1 would have been enough but oh well never felt any heat.
Driving board - moonlight (http://www.aquastyleonline.com/products/Driving-Board-Channel-6-%28Moonlight-kit%29.html) - 6 modules was way to much - 2 is to much really these are bright even for 1w LEDs
Project box (http://www.aquastyleonline.com/products/Project-Box-23cmX11.5cmX4.5cm.html) - to enclose all the electronics
I would be more than happy to help you put them together once you get a kit. All this is over my 37gal tank. - 30in X 12in X 22in

That is the exact kit I am looking at ordering! And your led selection helped me out a lot too. But I thought the Bridgelux
LEDs were 3w?
Last year I ordered the 120 kit and assembled it and had it over my 260. But changed directions on that tank. But now that
They came out with the kits with the controllers, I am going to do this for the 12g nano.
Thanks for the info, it was very helpful.

Oh, just reread your post. The moonlights were the 1w LEDs. Sorry about that.

yes the Bridgelux LEDs are 3 watt the moonlights are 1 watt. but the moonlights have 3-1watt leds in each module. so i got 6 modules that was 18 watts all together i only ended up using 2 modules and that is to much. ill give you the other 4 modules if you just buy the driving board.

oh i guess that wont work as you will need the 12volt Power supply as well and i don't know if that comes with the board only option.

here is the pattern I used i hope you can tell the difference between the led colors. i had 3 channels one for the white and one for blue crisscrossing the heat sink. then one channel right down the middle for violets and left over other colors.

I'll check into that. I will only need one module on this tank in that case. And I may take you up on that offer for help, or maybe if I can come over and check out your fixture that would be cool too.

Yea... I'm colorblind, but my wife will definitely be able to tell the difference. She picks all our corals too. I just go with the flow... Lol
